When it comes to winter, most people don’t immediately associate the Lone Star State with extreme winter weather, let alone Central Texas. The 2021 snowstorm proves we should be ready for anything the crazy Texas weather plans to throw at us.

Things to do before a freeze:

  • Protect your pipes

    • One of the most common problems during the winter is burst pipes. To help prevent this, insulate the pipes in your house. Exposed pipes and pipes in less insulated areas of your home are more susceptible to this problem.

  • Check your home for drafts

    • For smaller gaps, an easy fix for drafts is weather strips, caulk, seals, and door sweeps. The best solution to guarantee your home is truly safe, it’s worth the investment to hire a professional company to repair any damage.

  • Turn off outside faucets

    • Most homes have outside faucets. Disconnect any outside pipes and insulate and wrap your hose bibs.

  • Have an emergency kit ready

    • It’s Texas, we never know how long the extreme weather will last, but it’s best to be over-prepared. Here are some things that will come in handy:

      • Battery-powered flashlight

      • Portable phone charger

      • Drinking water

      • First Aid kit

      • Candles

      • Extra Blankets

      • Extra Batteries

      • Water Shut Off Key

Things to do during a freeze:

  • Keep a drip on

    • Dripping water from a faucet inside the house can help prevent bursting or freezing pipes.

  • Keep faucets and pipes warm

    • Opening the cabinet doors under your sink is an easy hack to keep these warm. This exposes the pipes to the warmer air circulating in your house. IMPORTANT: If you open your cabinet doors, remove toxic chemicals in your child’s or pet’s reach.
